A World Destined to End

The continent of Opath was thriving in social and magical development, but a great peril from beyond began to threaten peace: a large landmass suddenly tore through the skies and fell toward the continent. As time passed, this cosmic event became ever more common, and these falling meteorites became known as “Skyfalls”.

These events shook the geographical and social structures of Opath, but the aftermath was even more revolutionary: researchers who explored the crash site discovered an alien mineral with versatile magical properties that they called Aetherium. Aetherium's countless capabilities and applications enabled a remarkable technological leap throughout Opath, quickly spreading technological knowledge that developed a new science called Magitech.

Some of these Skyfalls were large enough to obliterate entire kingdoms from the map, becoming known as Great Skyfalls. Two of these have already happened over the years, and Oath's greatest researchers and sages agree that the third Great Skyfall may be the last: big enough to destroy the entire continent of Opath.

Tragic Fantasy

Skyfall RPG is a setting about exploring ancient catacombs, extraplanar chambers, and magic-filled urban environments — all on the brink of an apocalyptic catastrophe. This means that Skyfall RPG is a heroic setting, but always with a tone of melancholy and underlying anxiety. The world could end at any moment. Where will you be when the sky falls on your head? Opath is a fantastic and vivid continent, but there is nothing anyone can do to stop the catastrophe that will end the world. This sense of "ominous end" is one of the game's main themes and is present in various rules and characteristics in the setting. It is important to understand that Skyfall RPG is a game about losing in order to win.

Magic as Technology

The world of Opath is magical by nature, and this means that magic is part of everyday life for everyone. Magical mollusks are used as a means of distant communication, huge metal birds provide air transportation, and huge pocket dimensions can be found behind simple wooden doors. Magic is available to everyone, to a greater or lesser extent.

A World of Guilds

Harvesting the power of aetherium from within the skyfalls it is necessary to overcome the challenge of traveling to the fall sites and facing the alien dangers found there. To make this task possible, Adventurers' Guilds emerged. These organizations have the power and resources to explore these places and bring treasures and knowledge back to their patrons. The only true way to prosper on the continent of Opath is to be in good company.
